If you think that God created the world and that Jesus came to earth so that you could reach your full potential, so that you would gain back your authority, so that you would know how great you are.
I’m sorry, but you have missed the point of the gospel completely.
I say this with tears in my eyes, heart heavy. I know that I don’t know everything, in fact I know very little. But I know that the gospel is not about how great you and I are, quite the opposite. We are unworthy sinners, unable to save ourselves, unwilling to obey, stubborn and broken, saved by the amazing, unmerited and inconceivable grace of a mighty, holy, just and loving God.
Please, I plead with you, read the bible as though no one has told you what it means. Read the bible, not just verses, read it in context. Read your bible. There is no one who doesn’t have the time to read through the bible in a year. Get the whole story! I strongly urge you! If you think you don’t have time or the desire, ask God to help you! And then, decide. He will help you because He wants us to know Him! He loves you!
I’ve heard so many things lately: God wants us to be happy. It’s always God’s will for us to be healthy. God always wants to give us everything we desire. Everything I have I’ve earned and God wants me to enjoy it and spend it as I please (as long as I give 10% to the church). He has given us authority and now it’s up to us. If we have faith we will be able to do anything Jesus and God do. We just need to declare it and proclaim it and God has to do it.
My heart cries.
God is good folks. But He’s not good like we think of good, or according to us. He has not ceased to be holy and just because of the cross. It is only by the cross that we even dare draw near to Him, lest we die. All the glory, power and honor belong to Him! He is so much bigger and more powerful and mighty than us.
The gospel is simple, take up your cross and follow Him. Death. (Matthew 16:24-26)
Yes there are beautiful promises of life, but please don’t skip the central theme of the bible. Death comes first. If you would gain your life, you must lose it for Him. He has died that we might join Him in HIs death and live again! (John 12:23-27)
There is no joy greater than knowing He has forgiven us. The price is paid! We can draw near to our awesome God! Holy Holy HOLY!
This life is not about us. We are not the central character in this story. The story is about Him and His amazing plan to save us.
I urge you, plead with you, seek out the truth in the scripture. Ask God to show you if you are being deceived, because we all can be. I pray this all the time, I know I am fallible. God’s word is full of warnings that there will be false teachers. There is no bible teacher that we can listen to without examining what they are teaching. We need to be vigilant against ulterior motives of others and our own when we decide what we think scripture means. The worst false teachings come from the bible, distorting it, taking it out of context, a new revelation because we are “more spiritual” and have “more faith”, they are half truths, making it say something that was never part of the message. Truth mixed with lies that sound wonderful and make us feel good about ourselves but don’t cause us to fall face down before our Holy God in awe, wonder and thanksgiving.
2 Tim 4:3-4 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
2 Peter 3:14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
2 Peter 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping. 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; 6 if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless 8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— 9 if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment. 10 This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the flesh and despise authority. Bold and arrogant, they are not afraid to heap abuse on celestial beings; 11 yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not heap abuse on such beings when bringing judgment on them from the Lord. 12 But these people blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too will perish.
I hope you can hear my heart. I in no way mean to offend anyone. I KNOW that I don’t know everything! Please hear me on this. But I keep seeing people claim “truths” from the bible, that are defended only with a new understanding of an interpretation of a verse or a few verses taken out of context. We want to be more spiritual, have a new revelation… but I fear that we aren’t even obeying Christs clear instructions to preach the good news of salvation, visit the poor, give even when it costs us, and be like and walk in Jesus’ footsteps.
